Summer קיץ (kah-yeets) in Tel Aviv can get pretty intense, especially during the months of July and August. Nevertheless, it’s the happiest time of the year in the bustling city: thousands of people walk and exercise daily on the promenade טיילת (tah-yeh-leht), the beach חוף הים (chohf hah-yahm) is full of excited children and toddlers, men and women play paddle ball מטקות (maht-koht) and volleyball, and everyone generally looks very happy and tanned. If you happen to be in Israel right now, here are three things that could help you survive the summer in Tel Aviv:
The beach in Tel Aviv is one of the crowdest places in the city, but from Sunday to Thursday there are significantly less people (our weekend is Friday-Saturday). In order to avoid the hottest hours of the day, it’s better to go either early in the morning until noon (12 PM), or later in the afternoon until sunset שקיעה (shkee-ah).
Shenkin is one of the main streets of Tel Aviv, one that is famous for its many shops, delis and cafes. It also has at least three smoothie stands, where you can get a cold fruit smoothie שייק פירות (sheh-yeek peh-roht) that is made freshly on the spot. In one of them the owner even tries to pair a smoothie to each customer לקוח (lah-koh-ahch). I have to say that he’s pretty accurate.
First of all, no place is as well air-conditioned as a museum. I’m joking, after your body cools down as you walk through the different galleries, you will start to notice how incredible the exhibitions תערוכות (tah-ah-roo-choht) are. The museum holds both permanent and temporary collections of Israeli and international artists, and exhibits mainly contemporary and modern art אומנות (oh-mah-noot). The museum also offers guided tours and art workshops for kids.
