Why Now: Three Reasons to Start Learning Hebrew
You’ve been thinking about learning Hebrew for a while now, but it never seemed to be the right moment for you. But maybe now is the exact moment to start learning Hebrew, and here are some reasons why.
Unless you live in Israel, Hebrew עברית (Ivrit) is not your average go-to language. Not many people speak it; it’s very different from English and Latin languages, and there’s also a huge difference between Biblical Hebrew (the language of the Bible) and Modern Hebrew (the language spoken on the streets of Israel). A lot of people won’t understand why למה (lah-mah) you’re even considering it: you already speak English, and everyone in Israel speaks English anyway. But if you got here, it’s probably because you feel that Hebrew is more than “just a language.” So why start learning now?
1. Connect Deeper to Your Community
We live in a time of uncertainty; things are changing rapidly, and one of the few constants in our lives is the communities we’re part of. Hebrew can be a way to connect deeper to your Jewish community because language is the mirror of a culture. When you learn Hebrew, you create an instant link to all the other Hebrew speakers out there, whether they’re in Israel or on the other side of the planet. Even when you meet someone for the very first time, you’re already standing on common ground.
2. Understand Your Israeli Family \ In-laws
Modern Hebrew tremendously reflects Israeli culture: why we’re direct, “rude” (even though it’s not considered a lack of manners in Israel), and informal. It is a window to our way of thinking, doing business, and expressing our love. Any language you learn will bring you closer to the people who speak it, and many conflicts and misunderstandings between cultures and countries stem from not speaking the same language. It’s hard to understand this concept when you only speak one language (sorry to all the English speakers who read this), but when you learn another, you suddenly understand the mentality, humor and expectations of other people – solely by learning their language.
3. Being Part of Something Bigger
Hebrew is one of the most ancient languages in the world’s history. It has been around for thousands of years, and it miraculously survived to this day and age. It carries so much history within it, a record that doesn’t belong only to the Jewish people but is shared with other religions and cultures as well. Modern Hebrew evolved from Biblical Hebrew, but it shares many Arabic and Aramaic roots and influences from other languages such as Russian, Yiddish, Farsi, and German, to name a few. This is due to the immigration waves of Jews from all over the world to Israel during the 19th and 20th centuries, influencing the formation of the language. It is an anthropological excursion, one that is definitely worth joining.
